Nintendo is on a roll this E3, bringing back countless franchises from the depths of ancient past, and Pilotwings is no exception, with its return on the 3DS. The demo only had two vehicles on display, a plane and a jetpack, and one level. Curiously, the level itself is the Wuhu island from Wii Sports Resort, and looked fantastic in 3D.

As the plane, the goal was to fly through as many rings as possible before time ran out. There wasn’t much to it, but many of them resided low to the ground, providing a perfect chance for the game to strut its 3D stuff. It’s really hard to convey how cool it is to see actual depth in the scenary as you fly by. We already mentioned it in our Star Fox 64 3D preview, but it actually does make it easier to avoid obstacles, by virtue of better seeing where you are in relation to the environment.

We also had a quick go with the jetpack, which functioned very similar to the one in Pilotwings 64. You could fly around at one of two speeds, or hover in place, but one change that we noticed was the absence of a fuel indicator, allowing us to fly around at our leisure...at least until we realized we had an objective, which was to pop all of the balloons by flying through them. It controlled well, though takes some getting used to as it’s easy to propel yourself right into any of the numerous buildings littering the island.

Although the demo was limited, I’m looking forward to what else the final game might bring, especially with the inherent enhancements 3D brings to the experience.
