Gold Knights II proves to be, like its predecessor, a fair amount of fun. Granted, there are some concessions that needed to be made when bringing it to the iPhone, but these same changes also help create something that’s very playable and entertaining on Apple devices.

This time around, you’ll still have access to two characters, with Arthur taking the lead and Percival acting as an alternate choice. Arthur fills a more balanced role, combining both speed and a slew of different weapons at his disposal. Percival, on the other hand, has fewer weapons at his disposal, and he’s more of a brute, using his power to his advantage. He’s definitely the heavier hitter of the duo, especially when you take his charge ability into account. This new ability basically has Percival dash across the screen, killing anyone in his path with a single blow. While this ability may seem overpowered, it’s used with a cooldown system, placing a limit on how frequently you can use it.

Another thing to take note of is that this game has been built from the ground up for the iPhone and other touch-based devices. While the game will still provide a fair challenge, it doesn’t require that twitch-based reflex found in the classic NES game. Instead, a virtual controller will appear on screen, complete with a joystick and a few action buttons. The controls were responsive, and better yet, if things feel awkward for you, you can change the layout of these buttons on the fly, allowing you to move individual buttons anywhere on the screen, and considering the game spans nine zones with a brutal boss fight at the end of each one, this is certainly a handy touch.

Though it’s easy to forget about mobile games during a show designed to showcase the biggest and best console games over everything else, it’s nice to see Capcom is still paying attention to what is perhaps the biggest video game device available. Capcom has a huge list of franchises it can pursue on mobile, and it’s made the mistake of simply porting over some of these classic titles, but it seems that it’s starting to catch on by making more games like this. Ghosts ‘N Goblins: Gold Knights II manages to provide some great fun while making some changes for the current generation without wandering away from its roots. The classic GnG is one hell of a game, and it seems that Capcom is on the right track with this new installment to the series for the iPhone and iPod touch.
