The popular (and GameXplain favorite) Super Mario Crossover game, that allows several classic NES characters to play through Super Mario Bros., has been updated today with a host of new features. The most significant addition is the inclusion of a brand new character: Ryu of Ninja Gaiden fame. Ryu's unique abilities include climbing walls and throwing shurikens--poor Goombas never had a chance.

But that's not all; here are just some of the many new additions: For a complete list, please check the official site:

  • Samus can now crouch. Functionality can be turned on or off in options menu.
  • Simon can now change direction in midair. This can be enabled or disabled in the options menu.
  • Link can now attack in all four directions.
  • Mega Man can summon Rush Coil and his jump height has been decreased.
  • Added difficulty settings to the game: super easy, easy, normal, hard, and extreme
  • Added a new enemy, Spike Top, to Extreme mode. Spike Top sprites drawn by Jay Squared.

The creator, Jay Pavlina, wrote in a blog entry that this is the game he "would have wanted to originally release...if I had the time." He went on to state that "This is just the beginning," which leaves us excited for what may be coming next!

Luckily, we had the chance to interview Jay a few months back, which may offer some insight into what he has coming next. Click the links below to learn the history of Super Mario Cross, more about Jay, why he hates bugs, and what the future may hold:
