It is difficult to look at gaming and not wish certain things would happen. Maybe they're wishes for the industry as a whole or personal desires about certain games. We all have them. Unfortunately, sometimes no matter how hard you wish it's inevitable that yearning will never be fulfilled. So it's with that supremely uplifting though in mind that I present my ten wishes for gaming that will more than likely never happen.
1. Final Fantasy VII is remade.
A lot of you may cry foul on this one. Maybe it will, but maybe it won't. Square-Enix isn't talking other than the insane statement that it would take thirty years to do properly. I'd hate to think how long a PS3 remake of Final Fantasy VI would take then. Incidentally, if Final Fantasy VII is made, replace it with VI on this list.
2. World of Warcraft is dethroned by another MMO.
I don't hate World of Warcraft. Really, I don't. It's just that I love a good underdog and seeing all these other MMOs fight for second place is getting a little tiring. Imagine the reaction if another game is able to displace the mighty WoW. That'd be awesome to see. Unfortunately, I don't see that happening anytime soon. Star Wars: The Old Republic has potential but nothing else seems to be able to challenge it.
3. The Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Cross, Megaman Legends 2, and Vagrant Story all get sequels.
Welcome to RPG heaven if this ever happens. Each of these games are cult classics more than anything else but they all offered something truly unique when they were released. The Legend of Dragoon was Sony's answer to Final Fantasy and did a lot of things right. It was certainly better than Final Fantasy VIII. Chrono Cross doesn't get the same love as Chrono Trigger, but its battle mechanics were unique and kept many of the characteristics of the previous game. Chrono Break has been rumored multiple times and absolutely needs to come out. Megaman Legends 2, a personal favorite of mine, successfully expanded upon the original and further cemented that Megaman crossed with Zelda could work. Legends 3 has been asked about in the past and Megaman Volnutt and Roll Caskett have repeatedly appeared in Capcom's Vs. series. Not only that but it ended on a cliffhanger that I desperately want to see resolved. Finally Vagrant Story is seen as one of the finest action RPGs ever created and seemed like perfect fodder for Square-Enix's Ivalice Alliance project but nothing developed and there hasn't even been a hint about a sequel.
4. Mother 3 is released in the US.
We can't even get Earthbound on the Virtual Console so how are do we even stand a chance of getting its sequel? Everything I've heard about the game says it's superb so why would Nintendo keep it from us poor Americans? I have no clue. Perhaps the translation is a bit tricky but I'd like to think Americans are a bit more savvy about Japanese culture than before. At least when it comes to anime fans. It only took nine years for The Legendary Stafy to come to our shores. Maybe we just need to wait that long.
5. Peter Molyneux stops using hyperbole.
There's a reason Peter Molyneux is so well known. He can make some great games. The problem is he tends to overhype them beyond all reason. I can understand being excited about a game that you've been working on for so long but don't promise a laundry list of features that never happen in the final copy. What could be seen as a good game is now considered crap because it doesn't have what Mr. Molyneux promised it would. It'd be great if he stopped, but I think he's addicted to it at this point.
6. Activision stops milking its successful franchises every year.
Activision may be the corporate giant that everyone loves to hate, but there's no doubt they make great games. They're fun to play, and they typically sell well. The problem is gamers get no downtime between each successive release of their games. Every year we can expect a Guitar Hero (or three), Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Call of Duty. This should be great for gamers but two things happen. We become fatigued of the franchises and the quality starts to drop. The developers have no time to recharge themselves or give proper time to making a worthy sequel. Activision could still do great business if they waited two or three years between releases, but there's no profit in that for them when they're already making so much money.
7. Review scores no longer matter.
Ask any critic of any medium on their thoughts of review scores and you will get the same answer: They hate them. Too often gamers get hung up on the score given and not read the context of the written review. Getting rid of scores completely would force people to actually read reviews and form their own opinion based on that. Unfortunately this doesn't seem likely at all with sites like Metacritic exacerbating the problem and making gamers focus on the scores even more.
8. A Halo/Gears of War crossover is made.
That sound you just heard was millions of fanboys crying out in joy all at once. College students, machismo junkies, and teabag enthusiasts would all be behind this one. And who can blame them? Crossovers are dreamt about all the time and though they usually have mixed results, there's no denying the appeal that this one would have. Halo and Gears of War may not have the most natural fit but there's some fun possibilities to think about like having Marcus Fenix chainsaw an Elite in half or Master Chief throwing a plasma grenade into a group of Locusts. The fact that it will never happen kills the dream, but it would be an amazing team-up nonetheless.
9. Nintendo Vs. Capcom
If Super Smash Bros. has taught us anything, it's that seeing Nintendo characters beat the snot out of each other is a ton of fun. With Super Smash Bros. Brawl being the last game directed by series creator, Masahiro Sakurai, this is the perfect opportunity to take the next step and create Nintendo VS Capcom. Mario VS Ryu, Peach VS Morrigan, Link VS Dante, Samus VS Megaman, and Kirby VS Viewtiful Joe, the possibilities are enormous. I don't think this game will ever happen but if the right steps are taken, it could become a definite reality. Why am I so confident of that? First, this wouldn't be the first time Nintendo lent a character for a fighting game with Link appearing in Soul Calibur 2, and second, Nintendo has worked closely with Capcom in the past. Capcom has even made a few games in the Legend of Zelda series so the relationship is already there. It may not happen but all I'm saying is that Nintendo should think of the possibilities.
10. Bioware develops Final Fantasy XV
I don't even have to explain this one. Just think of all the possibilities, literally. There's no doubt that it would be incredible, but this, more than any other wish, will never happen.
These are just some of my wishes, but what about yours? What do you wish would happen that has as much a chance of happening as a toothpick supporting a house? Make sure to let us know in the comments.
