A newer version of Sonic Colors was available at PAX 2010 that included a previously unseen level, as well as a new a new Wisp power.

So for those unaware, one of the new additions to Sonic Colors is something known as Wisps. Wisps are basically power-ups scattered around the environment that grant a special ability, such as allowing Sonic to run super fast (well, faster), drill into the ground, or rebound around like a pinball.

Luckily, the new level I was able to play, Planet Wisp, contained the new wisp power: Orange Rocket.  Predictably, this power enables Sonic to launch upward in a straight line, permitting access to otherwise unreachable areas. The wisp was pretty cool, but wasn’t quite as fun as the other three (with our personal favorite being drill--check our previous impressions for more).

New wisp power aside, Planet Wisp played much like the previous levels, with several on-rail segments (where you can hop from one rail to the next) to break up the action. It’s still really fun and is one of my most anticipated games of the year. Look for it to launch on November 12th.

I’m certainly not the world’s biggest Sonic fan. I never completely finished any of the Genesis originals, though I did finish several of his 3D adventures, most of which felt extremely lackluster (to be fair I did enjoy some portions of Secret Rings and the first two Sonic Adventure titles).
