A surprise to the eyes was to see Mega Man Universe at TGS. Previously put on my "I don't care" radar to "Hey, it has a level editor" status, Mega Man Universe delivers the nostalgic experience you want without pounding your balls in like Mega Man 9 and 10 did. Don't be mistaken, the playable demo was tough but not that tough and it did feature easy, medium and hard difficulty settings.

Mega Man Universe featured six playable characters in the demo. There was the traditional chubby Mega Man appearing as you would expect him in 3D. Capcom was more focused on presenting another Mega Man with a round head but with skinny stick legs and arms. The stick version didn't jump as high but that could have been me shaking off Mega Man rust. Hilariously, Capcom included "US Mega Man" based off the shitty US box art of the original game. Yes, you can now play as the old-man faced, yellow and blue Mega Man, complete with a gun instead of an arm blaster. He was kept to the of cartoony proportions MM Universe and reminded me of the Viewtiful Joe art style.

The graphics for the game are 3D but I found myself forgetting that as it's played in 2D like a traditional Mega Man game. Everything is updated but still resembles the old NES style. It wasn't until I encountered a 2D sprite used for a checkpoint that I would be jarred and remember that more than 8-bits are under the hood.

A 360 controller was used for the demo with the bumpers used to cycle through weapons. The nostalgia factor was in full effect with updated versions of classic Mega Man tunes. There was also the return of old enemies such as the robot kangaroo that shoots something resembling a carrot, floating bolt robots with eyes and the nefarious bird that drops an egg with a swarm of tiny birds. My only problem with the controls was occasionally not being able to jump while running when I wanted to and being pushed back from a ledge when I didn't quite make it. Both of these issues resulted in Mega Man dying...twice.

Disappearing and appearing blocks in the air are also back. WHO KEEPS MAKING THIS DECISION?!!! At least they weren't that headache inducing in normal mode and there was the occasional steel box that remains in place. There was even a shortcut around half of them in the level I played.

Mega Man Universe's platforms are still undecided at this point but perhaps that means Capcom can't decide on a Wii version. If you're an old school Mega Man Fan, this might end up being the $50 Mega Man game you actually get.
