Two years ago, Dissidia: Final Fantasy was released to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the ongoing series. Fans were treated to a truly unique fighting game that was both complex and visually interesting. Some fights looked as if they had been pulled directly from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children even though it was all gameplay. But by far, the best part of the game for fans was seeing all the main heroes and villains, along with two secret characters, interacting with one another. It led to scenarios that no one thought they'd ever see outside of fan fiction.

With the announcement of Dissidia 012 [Duodecim]: Final Fantasy, Square Enix promises to bring back everything that made the first game great along with new enhancements and new characters. Kain from Final Fantasy IV, Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, Tifa from Final Fantasy VII, Vaan from Final Fantasy XII, and most recently Laguna Loire from Final Fantasy VIII have already been announced with the promise of more being unveiled as the game nears its release in Japan early next year. With that in mind, I thought it'd be interesting to look over all of the characters to ever appear in a Final Fantasy and choose the 46 that have the best shot at being a part of the sequel. Every weekday in December will highlight two potential fighters and give details on their history, their place in Duodecim's story (which is actually a prequel to the original), and their fighting potential.

Welcome to Dissidia December.

Yuna (Final Fantasy X)

In many ways, Yuna is the main character in Final Fantasy X as most of the plot revolves around her and her actions. Yuna is a Summoner, one of the few people in the world of Spira that might be able to stop the rampaging Sin, if only for a short time. Her father was a Summoner who was protected by Jecht, Tidus's father, and Auron. The game follows her pilgrimage to gather Aeons before reaching the Final Aeon and ultimately stopping Sin for ten years. This plan goes off track however when it becomes more and more apparent that the machinations around this cycle are neverending. She discovers that the Final Aeon is actually a sacrifice of one of her Guardians and that Guardian will become Sin in a few years, restarting the cycle. At the behest of Tidus, Yuna decides to defeat Sin at its core. They discover that Sin is actually the armor for a powerful Summoner known as Yu Yevon. Once Yuna and the party defeat him, the threat of Sin disappears forever. Yuna is regarded as a hero but Tidus disappears in the process. She takes to heart many of his views which changes her overall personality. She becomes less demure and more prone to action. This shift could be the basis for her story in Duodecim. She believes that she can stop Chaos by sacrificing herself, but Tidus tries to convince her that it would mean nothing.

The third and final summoner I've chosen from the Final Fantasy series, Yuna would be the most unique if only because of the possibilities that stem from her presence in Final Fantasy X-2. Her basic abilities though would follow what I've established in the past. Her aerial Brave attacks would call upon Valefor which would grant her wind-based attacks and greater speed. Conversely, her ground Brave attacks would utilize Ifrit's fire attacks and increase her defense. Finally, Yuna's HP attacks uses Yojimbo and his various sword abilities while also increasing her strength. Where Yuna would differ from Rydia and Garnet is that her EX Mode would transform her into her Gunner costume from Final Fantasy X-2 and grant her all the abilities that came with it. Her attacks would have a much longer range and her speed would be equal to Tidus's. Her EX Burst would allow her to summon Anima, who would unleash Oblivion on her opponent. Yuna would be a unique summoner with average summons but devastating abilities once she reaches EX Mode. Players who can adapt between the two styles would find Yuna to be a potent fighter.

Auron (Final Fantasy X)

If there is one character that most Final Fantasy fans can agree on wanting to see in Duodecim, it's Auron. As one of the Guardians of Yuna's father, Auron is well respected though he harbors dark secrets about the Yevon religion. Because of his journey ten years ago, he's well aware of the corruption within Spira's world and what the cycle of Sin's rebirth truly means. Yet he keeps quiet about all this, wanting the rest of the group to figure it out on their own. Auron mainly acts as a guide to Yuna and is devoted to avenging the sacrifices of Jecht and Yuna's father. He actually tried this once before when confronting Yunalesca, who is the one that instructs on the purpose of the Final Summoning. She easily defeats him and Auron actually dies from the inflicted wounds. However, his will was still so tied to the world that he became Spira's version of a ghost, an Unsent. When the party finally stops the cycle of Sin, Auron willingly goes on to the afterlife to join his old friends. For Duodecim, Auron's story would focus on his friendship with Jecht and show just how Jecht switched sides from Cosmos to Chaos.

Auron is a samurai through and through. It's obvious in his outfit, his battle stance, and his overall strength. Auron's attack and defense would be incredibly high but his speed would be one of the slowest in the game. Unlike most other characters who are able to chain their attacks together, Auron's strikes are so powerful that they would immediately send the opponent flying. This creates a double-edged sword of being able to inflict damage without repercussion but making it necessary for Auron to get in close again. If the opponent is ready, this could prove incredibly difficult. Auron's most powerful abilities would be those pulled from his Overdrives in Final Fantasy X. Dragon Fang would be a downward strike at his opponent, Shooting Star is a high-powered swing that will drive an enemy into a wall no matter how far away, and Banishing Blade would send out four energy balls from his sword to hunt down his opponent. Auron's EX Mode would add status effects to his attacks causing attack, defense, speed, or magic to decrease. His EX Burst would be Tornado, which creates a whirlwind around his enemy before his tosses his sake jug inside and igniting the air. Auron's lack of combos would take some getting used to but those able to master the intricacies would have a great character at their command.

These are only my choices. What do you think? Would Yuna and Auron make great characters in Dissidia 012 [Duodecim]? Who would you like to see in the sequel? Let us know in the comments!
