Shortly after demo’ing Uncharted 3, Sony provided a demo of Uncharted: Goldene Abyss for their upcoming handheld, the PlayStation Vita.

In it, we saw Drake exploring an ancient temple, which was extremly similar to the ones present in the original Uncharted. The game looks almost exactly like the console versions, but on a handheld system--it’s very impressive. We noted that the waterfall Drake was climbing adjacent too looked very convincing.

But as they only showed one environment, they focused more on how you can interact with Drake. Thanks to the Vita’s several unique forms of input, you can actually control Drake in brand new ways. Examples provided include tapping enemies to punch them during combat, tilting the handheld to make Drake lean toward a platform while hanging, and finally, what was called “painting edges.” To demonstrate this, we saw Drake climbing along a wall with several thin ledges--instead of making Drake jump to each and every one manually, you can just draw a path using the touchscreen across them all to have Drake cross them automatically. It looked neat, but I wonder if it will seem less engaging--but of course, you can control Drake conventionally as well.

We’re about to get some hands-on time with the game, so stay tuned to GameXplain.com for more impressions!
