E3 2011: Top 6 Disappointments of the Sony E3 Conference (No Metal Gear!)

While Sony’s press conference was definitely better than Microsoft’s, it still felt a little lacking in places. Here’s the top 5 things we were most disappointed by.

1. Goodbye Megaton Announcement
There was nothing too terrible during the Sony E3 conference but then there was nothing too exciting too. If you weren’t an Uncharted fan or took notice at the $249/299 PS Vita price points, you could have wondered what just happened.

2. HD Remastery Instead of New Titles
Sony took the remake route with two of their biggest franchises with no new God of War announced or new Last Guardian gameplay shown.  A God of War PSP collection and Ico/Shadow of the Colussus HD collection are on their way in HD and 3D. The PS3 mantra “Just wait one more year,” went by unsaid.

3. Where’s Square Enix? And for that matter, any Japanese developer?!
Final Fantasy XIII-2 was the only Square Enix game on hand but that was in a booth behind the stage and not on the big screen. It’s a shame to see what was once such a prominent developer to become the Sony equivalent of Rare. To top it off, the only Japanese developer there was Capcom to show off Tekken X Capcom on the PS Vita. Where are games like Dragon’s Dogma and Dark Souls? Sony probably had little interest in showing off multi-platform titles without exclusive PlayStation elements.

4. No Kevin Butler
Last year Kevin Butler went up onstage during the Sony E3 conference but was no where to be found this year. The timing would have been good with PSN being online again. However, Jack Tretton and Kazua Hirai took a more sombre and serious note to that. Kudos though for Hirai making a jab at Tretton for being the first Sony executive to wear a tie, only to have Tretton bring up Riiiidge Racer later. Admittedly, the bacon cupcakes with sprinkles made up for his absence.

5. Where’s Metal Gear?
The Metal Gear series has always been a huge part of Sony’s consoles, and while last year’s unveiling bucked the trend with a confirmed 360 release, it’s still coming to the PS3 as well. Unfortunately, there was no Metal Gear presence this year on PS3 or Vita at all. No new metal Gear games, no word of the Metal Gear remakes, and no additional information on Rising. We would have liked to have seen something, anything, really. Snaaaaaaaaaake.

6. No Major PSN Improvements
We don’t even need to compare PSN to Xbox’s announced E3 makeover to be disappointed. We suppose Sony was just happy to get the service back online after last month’s hacking attempts took it down, but the fact of the matter is that PSN still pales in comparison to Xbox Live from even several years ago. We would love to hear about new additions, but Sony seems content to update it as a much slower pace than Microsoft. But it is free, sooo....

Overall, the rest of the year might turn out to be solid for PlayStation but not outstanding. The PS Vita will generate the most excitement but time will tell on what the launch titles will be. Sony’s PS3 console lineup feels thin outside of Uncharted and once again we are left again looking to next year.
