Wii U: Controller Syncing Made Easy Thanks to NFC?

Surely anyone who owns a Wii has experienced the pain that is syncing the controller:

  • Removing the Wii Remote jacket
  • Taking off the battery cover
  • Hitting both the "sync button" hidden inside the Wii Remote and on the front of the Wii itself
  • Pray

After doing this, the console will attempt to sync the controller, which rarely ends successfully. And God help you if you have four controllers to sync. Granted, the PlayStation 3 (which required mini-USB cords) and Xbox 360 aren't without their own issues, but the Wii was definitely the most troublesome of the three.

Fortunately, if we understand the news coming from Nintendo's Investor Meeting correctly, the Wii U will likely solve all this, thanks to Near Field Communication technology (or NFC for short). You may have heard the term before, as it's famously been used in Google's line of Nexus Android phones to allow for seamless sharing of information simply by tapping phones together and wireless payments simply by placing your phone on a compatible credit card reader.

If our understanding of the news is correct, what this means is that you'll be able to seamlessly sync Wii U controllers to the Wii console simply by tapping it against the console itself. This completely seamless and idiot-proof method of syncing will be much appreciated by anyone who has had to walk their parents through the process over the phone...multiple times.

Unfortunately, this technology won't help syncing classic Wii Remote controllers, which are fully compatible with the Wii U. Although it is possible Nintendo coud release an upgraded model specifically tailored with the Wii U in mind, we'll have to wait and see if this is the case.

There are other potential uses of NFC Nintendo could use to, such as multiplayer titles that allow sharing of information between multiple Wii U controllers with a simple tap, or promotional items that can be "scanned" into the Wii U with a simple tap.

We'll surely be finding out more about the Wii U and how exactly NFC factors into the console at E3 2012, coming up in June.,
